Libre featuring Ibeyi

by Emicida

/

about

A cry for the right to live, resist and love in your own way. That is the main subject in “Libre”, the third single from Emicida’s upcoming studio project, titled AmarElo and with its release due for the second half of 2019. Once again, the rapper from São Paulo join forces with the franco-cuban duo Ibeyi, formed by the twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz, for a collaborative effort (the first one was “Hacía El Amor”, from 2018). Recorded in São Paulo, at the Red Bull Studio, and produced by Marcio Arantes.

With a hint of brazilian funk and high energy, “Libre” is an experience beyond geographical boundaries and language. Through the lyrics, the artists play with the word “nós” (us, in English) - keeping in mind that one of the rapper’s motto is “a rua é noiz” (the street is us). In English, the pronunciation of the term sounds like “noise”, using word play to also mean “noise”.

Using the idea that one word can mean many things, we took the binding capacity of music and put in our power to build something much bigger,” says Emicida, who also reveals the will to search for a deep poetic side to things”.

“The point was to make a song that would make people dance instantly. We were all involved in the production and knew exactly where we wanted to go with it. “Libre” includes Naomi singing the lyrics written by Emicida, and it is the first time she rapped in her whole life”, says Lisa-Kaindé.

The track is released alongside a music video that presents dance and movement as essential elements to life. Directed by Fred Ouro Preto, the audiovisual piece was recorded at Ouvidor 63, the largest cultural occupation in Latin America, localized near Vale do Anhangabaú, in the center region of São Paulo.

Emicida keeps building a narrative around his upcoming project, AmarElo. At first, the single “Eminência Parda” was released, and was responsible for showcasing where the real power comes from, and with intention to empower people to feel great things when looking in the mirror. Afterwards, the title-track “AmarElo” worked as an exercise for everyone to look around and see themselves as bigger than their problems, regardless of who they are. ““Libre” is a way of screaming for freedom, saying that we are free, beautiful, strong and elegant, you know?”, explains Emicida. “The vibe is like the energy when you are getting ready for a night out. You only live once, go live!”.

Emicida São Paulo, Brazil

Born Leandro Roque de Oliveira (Emicida is a play on ‘MC’ and ‘homicide’), 31 years ago in a northern suburb of São Paulo, Emicida began, by imitating every MC he heard and rapping in his own version of English. He soon shifted to Portuguese and via circulated recordings of his appearances at freestyle rapping battles and, later, mixtapes from his own makeshift studio, his fame spread. ... more
